Martinborough Museum

Haere Mai and welcome to the Martinborough Museum where you can explore local history in a attractively furnished heritage building.

Martinborough Museum collects, preserves and displays material and information relating to th natural and cultural heritage of Martinborough and the South Wairarapa.

Exhibition: Finding George

Who was the man behind Pain Farm and one of Martinborough’s earliest success stories? Our new exhibition, Finding George, uncovers the life of this ambitious, tough, and quietly influential pioneer — pieced together from fragile memoirs, old newspapers, and the traces he left across the Wairarapa. Discover how a young labourer who walked over the Remutakas in search of work became a bold entrepreneur, generous benefactor, and community legend.

Built in 1894

The Martinborough Museum building was designed by renowned architect Charles Natusch. It opened in 1894 as the town's library. Accommodation for the librarian was added in 1906. It remained a library for over 80 years before becoming the museum in 1978.
